Impact
Social-ecological impact
What has changed since restoration began in 2018, on the coast and for the people who live around it.
We assess the restoration at Tanjung Widoro as a social-ecological system: the recovery of the ecosystem is considered together with its benefits for local people. The figures below cover the whole programme since 2018, not a single year of work.
Ecological
- 2,513 trees/ha
- mean tree density, classed as good (very dense) under Minister of Environment Decree 201/2004
- 80.34%
- mean canopy cover across 16 monitoring plots
- 2.41 t C/ha
- mean biomass carbon stock; expected to rise as the stands have not yet matured
- Coastal vulnerability modelling (InVEST) shows the mangroves lower the exposure of the shoreline to waves and storms.
Economic
- Rp 99.54 million
- gross annual value of the catch around the mangroves (mud crab, oyster, mullet, rebon shrimp, clams and others)
- 17.5 ha
- fishing area used by local fishers and shellfish gatherers
- Food stalls run by local people have opened in the PRPM Mengare area to serve visitors.
Social
- Neglected, eroded land has become a public space used by the people of Tanjung Widoro and Mengare, and by visitors from other areas.
- Nearby schools use the site for outdoor learning.
- Since 2020 the site has been run independently by Pokmaswas Tanjung Widoro, whose members are local fishers.
- About 3,000 visitors from 50 institutions came to learn in 2018–2020.
